Devoid of any true help, cast into a surreal world with rules to which they are alien, the once able protagonist exerts himself to exhaustion to no avail. His protagonists, usually confident and energetic men, become locked in contest with a power they cannot overcome, and eventually subside. Kafka is known for his recurring theme of helplessness.
